This season Orla Kiely was inspired once again by a Wes Anderson film. Where AW13 had a distinctly Margot Tenenbaum look, SS14 had a very Moonrise Kingdom feel. It makes perfect sense, in her 60s collared mini dresses and knee high socks, Suzy Bishop is the original Orla girl. The presentation swapped the fictional island of New Penzance for the African plains, complete with life size rhino and zebra.
Guests enjoyed champagne topped with novelty plastic monkeys or cartons of Um Bongo, as the models entered to the sound of the Dixie Cups’s Iko Iko and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. They settled into camp life, catching butterflies, painting landscapes and examining things with magnifying glasses. Classic organza tea dresses were accessorized with binoculars bags and berets. Shorts and zebra print tees kept it casual, and jumpers embellished with sequined lions added whimsy. One of my favourite outfits was a crisp white shirt paired with an embellished camel coloured skirt. Very safari chic.
