I like tea and I like cake (and the proof is available to purchase on amazon), but I’ve never thought of combining the two. Bluebird Tea, however, have, and they contacted me asking it I was like to try some. Their three cakey teas are inspired by birthday cake, Christmas cake and the classic Victoria sponge cake.
What’s really clever is how they’ve created the essence of cake without just using an artificial flavouring. The Victoria sponge cake is a mix of Ceylon tea, freeze dried strawberries, raspberry granules, coconut and raspberry leaves. The birthday cake is a mixture of Ceylon and roobois tea, mallow flowers, almond and sugar sprinkles and the Christmas cake tea combines cloves, cinnamon, mixed peel, pine needles and sugar snowflakes.
The first thing I noticed about these teas is that they really do smell like cake. Having a pot brewing in the kitchen will fill the room with a lovely freshly baked cake smell, which I’m certainly not adverse to. The victoria sponge tea tastes great, so lovely and refreshing. The birthday cake is a lot of fun, with real sprinkles in the tea, and has a really sweet and creamy taste. The Christmas cake tea is rich and warming, I might just be keeping this one until after summer. Bluebird Tea do a huge range of teas (the champagne elderflower looks lovely), not just Cakey Teas, so do check out their website.
