This year I was lucky enough see Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty at Sadler’s Wells for my birthday treat (23, eek!). It was an amazing production; truly stunning. The costumes, set and story telling were all wonderful. Mathew Bourne’s retelling takes a few liberties with the original plot, creating a real love story that spans the decades, not just a princess waking up to find some dude kissing her. I loved that it was set in the Victorian era and that she awoke in the modern day. The Victorian costumes in particular were beautiful. The only disappointment was the the music was recorded, not live.
Photos from various online sources, obviously not taken by me.

Wow, that looks magical, I wish I could see it! Your illustration is also lovely
This looks truly beautiful, magical! I saw Sleeping Beauty in ballet late last year, by the Russian National Ballet. It was the first time I’d been to see a ballet and I loved the magic of the dance and the rich costumes and settings. But I was personally a bit disappointed that the story telling seemed to have been a minor detail, and was ignored completely for large chunks of the performance! This production looks stunning and I’m so glad you noted that the storytelling was an integral part of the Sadler’s Wells performance. Thanks for sharing
